Donald Trump set to announce 25% tariff on all US steel and aluminium imports

US President Donald Trump has said he will announce a 25% tariff on all American steel and aluminium imports on Monday, which includes those from Canada and Mexico.

The announcement is scheduled for Monday, with the tariffs set to take effect later in the week.

“Any steel coming into the United States is going to have a 25% tariff,” he told reporters on Sunday as he travelled to New Orleans to attend the Super Bowl.

When asked about aluminium, he said it would also face trade penalties.

Trump reiterated that he would announce “reciprocal tariffs” on either Tuesday or Wednesday, meaning the US would impose import duties on products when another country levied duties on American goods.

“If they are charging us 130% and we’re charging them nothing, it’s not going to stay that way,” he said.

Trump gave no details on steel and aluminium duties or reciprocal tariffs.

He had previously threatened a 25% import tax on all goods from Canada and Mexico but paused it for 30 days last week. Meanwhile, he imposed a 10% duty on imports from China.

On Friday, he said he would delay tariffs on millions of small packages – often from fast-fashion brands like Temu and Shein – until customs officials find a way to enforce them. These packages were previously exempt from tariffs.

The small packages have previously been exempt from tariffs.

Trump’s latest comments have worried some of America’s global trading partners.

South Korea’s acting president, Choi Sang-mok, called a meeting with the country’s top foreign policy and trade officials on Monday to examine how Trump’s proposed tariffs on steel and aluminium would affect its industries.

The 78-year-old’s remarks are the latest example of his willingness to threaten and, in some cases, impose import taxes.

This time, tariffs are arriving much earlier in his presidency than in his previous term, when he focused on tax cuts and deregulation.
